George Senior - One of Hollywood's Old Masters

George Segal has died aged 87. This is not breaking news, however, it is a sad situation and we can only imagine what Segal's final resting place will be. Known to most as the actor who played the lovable but psychologically disturbed owner of "The Goldbergs", Segal's tenure on Broadway was particularly short lived. He only lasted two seasons before being replaced by an unknown artist in the musical theater and promptly quit the following year.

The first film that George Segal ever appeared in was "A Day In The Life Ofpins". This was the film that put him into the forefront of the acting profession. The film was directed by Blake Edwards and featured recognizable faces such as Marlon Brando, Roy Rogers, John Aston and Danny Kaye. George Segal's presence on the screen was felt in just a handful of minutes, as he steals the show.

Another role that George Segal may have had in his illustrious career is that of Donny Cates in the movie, "Breakfast At Tiffany's". George was seen as a shady character by the time the film reached the theater; however, upon its release, he became recognized for his work. George Segal was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Breakfast at Tiffany's and Donny Cates was nominated for the same award. It was also George's first taste of mainstream superstardom. His other films that are often attributed to his tenure on Broadway included "Cable Guy", "Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II".

George Segal's greatest role to date would have to be his contribution to the Coen brothers' film, "O Brother, Where's My Brain?" which he originated in. The film itself went on to become one of the year's biggest hits, and George's performance alone was responsible for its success. George was brought into the project as a replacement for Ben Stiller, who left due to personal problems. It was rumored that Ben wished to take advantage of the increased box office success of the film by directing it himself, however, the two decided to work together once again.

George's role in the film was as the wise older brother to Michael; however, he was only seen as such in the trailers for the film. It was later revealed that George was the one who suggested Michael to marry Frieda Holsten, the original owner of their parents restaurant, at the age of 14. Michael and Frieda were married in 1969 and remain so to this day. The movie provided the perfect platform for George to develop his acting abilities and established him as one of the best actors of his time.

George's many awards including an Academy Award for his work in 'Irene', were a great surprise to his fans. This award marked the beginning of his illustrious career. Throughout his career he garnered several more Academy Awards for his roles in 'My Fair Lady' and 'A Fish called Wanda'. George also gained additional honors for his work in the films 'A Few Good Men', 'Cable Guy' and 'The Bodyguard'. His best known roles were those in the series 'ER', in which he played Dr. Mathis Luther King, and 'A Few Good Men' where he played partner to Patrick Swayze.

George Senior was diagnosed with cancer around one month before his death. He had been receiving treatment for the illness on the days before his death, but collapsed in his sleep on the night of his funeral. People close to him say that he never felt better and was proud to have beaten cancer. Prior to his untimely death, he had gained a number of honors for his performance in the film industry. His many honors include an Academy Award for his contribution to the film industry, and a Golden Globe for his contribution to the television show 'Seinfeld'.

George Senior was one of the few older members of the Segal family. In his last film role, he played younger than usual man in the soap opera 'That Earns Me Money'. His final performance as a part of the Segal family will be one of the most beloved of his career. His final scenes will be portrayed by Jeff Daniels, who is twenty-two years old at the time of his death. George Senior was also responsible for the casting of younger actors in movies such as 'When Harry Met Sally' for Roger Moore.
